1900s Dutch Gambrel Whole House Renovation

About This Dutch Gambrel Home Renovation
This comprehensive renovation of a 1902 Dutch Gambrel home was truly extensive. Staying faithful to its historical roots, the project included the complete overhaul of all five bathrooms and a full kitchen gut renovation. The homeowners expressed a desire for a mudroom, which led us to construct a new addition, complemented by a welcoming cedar deck situated above the mudroom.
A central element of this Gambrel renovation was the thorough reimagining of the five bathrooms. In both the primary bath and the powder room, the homeowners opted for modern wall-hung toilets. The Duravit toilet tanks are elegantly concealed within the wall, making the toilets appear to float in the space. We engineered a robust 2x6 steel structure to support each commode and its user. To enhance the size of the primary bathroom, we combined two smaller rooms, making way for a luxurious stand-alone tub and a stunning glass wall shower enclosure. To ensure ultimate comfort, we incorporated a radiant floor heating system.
Among the features the homeowners envisioned for this renovation was a mudroom. To fulfill this request, we added an extension to accommodate the spacious new mudroom. The freshly built cedar deck above offers the homeowners a perfect private retreat. The mudroom is equipped with built-in seating and storage cubbies, ideal for winter coats, boots, sports gear, and more.
This was a truly comprehensive whole-house remodel. Enhancements as part of this Dutch Gambrel renovation included a complete HVAC and heating system overhaul, fresh paint throughout the entire home, and the installation of a cutting-edge sound system. The bathrooms and kitchen showcase several varieties of hand-laid tiles, while all appliances were upgraded, featuring a chef's range with dual ovens. To maximize functionality, we constructed a custom-made banquette in the kitchen, with both benches incorporating ingenious hidden storage accessed via side-mounted drawers. To bring the interior stairs up to code, we elevated the ceiling by 18 inches, widened the staircase, and fitted a stylish new light fixture from Circa Lighting.
From the radiant flooring to the bespoke banquette, this Dutch Gambrel home renovation stands as an exemplary model of what a historic house remodel can achieve.
